With a vicious punch in the first round, Paul Daley knocked Scott Smith cold on Saturday night’s Strikeforce card.

There wasn’t anything fancy about this fight. They stood in front of each other and threw punches, and within the first minute there was the first knockdown, with Daley hitting Smith hard and sending him flying against the fence. As he so often does, Smith recovered quickly, however, and got back to his feet.

But it wasn’t long before Daley landed an absolutely brutal left hook to Smith’s head, putting Smith face-first on the canvas and unconscious.

“This ain’t no movie,” Daley said afterward.

He then added, referencing his explosive nickname, “Semtex is for real.”

Smith did get back up and walk out of the cage afterward, and he appeared to be OK. But that knockout loss was brutal.

For Daley, who was fired by the UFC after taking a sucker punch at Josh Koscheck following his loss to Koscheck this year, it was an emphatic return to the national stage. It was also one of the best wins of his pro MMA career, improving his record to 26-9-2.

Daley said that he’d next like to fight KJ Noons, and then after that he hopes to take on Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz.

“I’m here to be the champion,” Daley said. “And I’m going to be the champion.”

If he keeps fighting like he did on Saturday night, Daley can become a Strikeforce champion soon.

Heavy.com is reporting that former WEC champion Miguel Torres will make his UFC debut at UFC 126 in February against Antonio Banuelos. Both men are coming to the UFC in the coming merger between the world’s largest MMA promotion and it’s “little brother” promotion, the WEC. UFC 126 is to be main evented by a middleweight title fight between Vitor Belfort and long-time champion Anderson Silva.

Torres recently rebounded from back-to-back losses with a dominant win over Charlie Valencia. Prior to that he had lost his title to Brian Bowles and then lost the follow-up fight to Joseph Benavidez. Similarly, Banuelos recently reversed his fortunes as he followed up a loss to Scott Jorgensen with a win over Chad George on the same WEC 51 card where Torres found himself back on the winning track.

Both men are known as action fighters and both are more than capable of delivering fight of the night type stuff every time they enter the cage. This fight is a perfect example of how the UFC will use the lighter weight fighters to flesh out their cards. This card is filled with UFC stars but also will benefit from the excitement of the WEC fighters. The days of seeing bad fights between fledgling low-tier fighters make broadcasts are likely a thing of the past.

Careful: Miguel Torres is voted one of the top ten pound for pound MMA fighters. I welcome the former WEC Fighter and hope he does well.

UFC 117 is in dire need of chaos. The main card, Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen just may do the trick. Silva is an excellent fighter but has never been challenged on the ground. A stand up fighter with a reach on his oppenents from hell, has held his social and fighter status as “TOP DOG” in the cage.

So here’s what needs to happen to stir the UFC pot. First, I must say that even though a Shane Carwin vs. Brock Lesnar is on the horizon – UFC fans can say the that the Lesnar drama is getting old and there is a need for a new commotion. Chael is a solid contender and with his tactical wrestling skills, he will challenge the Spider’s grappling abilities. Has anybody seen the Spider on the ground much at all? Well I haven’t seen much eaither. It may put a new perspective on things. If any fighter can get in close to Silva, then we gotta good match. If they stay out then they are going to catch the long reach in the jaw and the TKO goes to the Spider.

So like Brock being humbled by Carwin (which never happend but I was personally tuned it to see it – God knows Brock is a baby) Chael has to lay down the law on Silva and give him a dose of “holla back biotch”. But on the flip side I like watching Silva fight. Hopefully the fight will not be one way and we will whitness the ground game from Silva that is rare to see and Sonnen surely will have favor in the given situation.

So Chael, make us proud – you’re the underdog taking on a top-notch fighter with a growing ego. Bust the bubble that we call a head and go to the top. We are all watching, listening and waiting for the results. Don’t let us down.

There was a lot of buzz from MMA Fans after UFC 116. A square match between Shane Carwin and Brock lesnar, ended with a TAP-OUT from Shane Carwin in the second round. Personally I couldn’t believe Shane would finish with a tap or even lay down like a dead fish for Brock to basically sit on his face. Brock got lucky – and he also got his ass handed to him in the first round by Shane’s “fists of furry” It’s amazing that Brock lasted that long. Whats even more amazing is he still won by tap out.

So what was the buzz after the main card? R-E-M-A-T-C-H That’s right - the folks I attended the fight with wanted a rematch. Many were upset and couldn’t believe their eyes but it’s all about the Win and Brock took the “W” with an honorable bloody smile. Shane Carwin came out smashing faces in the first round. Brock, by all means, was mostly defenseless and Shane landed about 100 fist smashers on Brocks head. Most of them, if not all weren’t clean punches but they still drew blood and they still held Brock to the floor.

I haven’t seen fear in Brock Lesnar’s eyes – EVER! But then a man named Shane Carwin came along and he did indeed humble Brock, not by words, or by the means of media but with his white knuckles. I’m sure Brock will have nightmares in the coming days of the Brock Lesnar Vs. Shane Carwin Ultimate Fighting Championship Rematch.

Dear, Dana please bring Brock/Carwin 2 back to the UFC – And bring it back soon!

If you read me site you can see that I’m not much of a Bisping fan after the whole Ultimate Fighter series. Bisping was humbled by Dan Henderson. My money is on Silva to do the same thing.

UFC 110 Michael Bisping vs Wanderlei Silva UFC 110 Picks: Due to the fact that the success he has enjoyed throughout his career hasn’t transferred over to the Ultimate Fighting Championship, sports betting odds favorite Wanderlei Silva [-165 ML] faces the possibility of a must-win bout against Michael Bisping [+135 ML] in tonight’s UFC 110. Since coming over from PRIDE, the Axe Murderer is just 2-5 in the UFC and thus, has decided to shed some pounds and compete at the middleweight division.

Hmm my money is on Silva

This fight has all the ingredients to be a must-see, as both guys will be looking to knock each other into next week. But when it comes to punching power, I have to give the edge to the Brazilian. I think that if Wanderlei can come out aggressive and looks to end the fight quickly, he can eliminate the potential for rust and fatigue from the cutting of the weight. Besides, I think that as proud and macho as Bisping tries to be, it would not take much for him to fall into a slugfest in the middle of the Octagon, and I think we all pretty much know who would be the last man standing if it gets to that point.

Marquardt sports an 8-2 record in UFC matches, and an overall MMA record of 32-8-2. His most recent fight came at UFC 102 back in August, in which he defeated Demian Maia by knock out just 21 seconds into the fight. His only two UFC losses came against Thales Leites and Anderson Silva.

The 6′ 0″ 185 pound fighter has a very powerful and impressive ground game. This gives him an advantage over Sonnen in this match up, should the bout get to the ground. Marquardt is a very solid ground fighter from on his back and could submit Sonnen.

Marquardt is a three-time Champion of the middleweight division in the Pancrase Champion, and possesses a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu. Nearly half of his MMA wins have come by submission.

On the other side of the ring, Sonnen was a former college National Champion wrestler, All-American, and was even an alternate on the United States Olympic wrestling team. Despite his impressive wrestling credentials, Sonnen would would still be better served keeping the fight from the ground as long as possible. Marquadt would nullify any attempt that Sonnen tries to submit.

Sonnen has the advantage in striking, and would hold the upper hand in the fight if he is able to execute a game plan that keeps the fight to a striking battle. His last few losses have come by way of submission, and Sonnen will be weary of that. Sonnen won his last outing against Yushin Okami.

Both of these fighters are nearing a title shot against current holder Anderson Silva and a win will move them one step closer.

This middleweight clash on paper seems to be relatively even, but sports books such as Bodog are favoring Marquadt heavily. Currently, Marquadt is installed as a -525 favorite to defeat Sonnen according to the MMA Betting lines at Bodog sports book. Sonnen assumes the underdog role, and is currently set at +325 in this match up.

The fight can be seen live on Saturday, February 6th from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Ls Vegas. It. will be broadcast on Pay-Per-View.

After losing Quinton “Rampage” Jackson to “retirement,” the UFC was left scrambling to find a worthy main event to headline their first event in Memphis, Tennessee.

BJ Penn will be defending his lightweight title against #1 contender Diego Sanchez in the main event. Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir will take on Cheick Kongo in a bout that has title implications in a fluid heavyweight division.

Jon Fitch will also be returning to action against Mike Pierce in a welterweight bout while Clay Guida looks to bounce back from his loss to Sanchez against Kenny Florian, who’s coming off of a loss to Penn.

“I’m gonna put my heart and soul in the Octagon, and I’m not trying to win with points, I’m gonna win with either a submission or a knockout – everyone will see me at my best on November 21st.”

Griffin is equally as excited ahead of the main event this weekend.

“It’s always nice to be in the main event, especially since I’m fighting at home,” said Griffin.

“As far as the fight goes, a lot has happened since 2006, and I think I’m much better than I was back then. That means a win on November 21st, but more importantly I want to settle the score with Tito.”

We all are aware of the main cards for UFC 104, and 105 but I’m going to cut to the chase. Mashida favored for 104 & hoping for Couture to pull a “W” for 105 — But let’s get real — I think everyone is stoked for UFC 106…

After Brock Lesnar’s act with Frank Mir it is apparent that there are a handful of MMA fans that would enjoy somebody humble the BIG OAF. With little class and tact, the former wrestler/entertainer from the WWE failed to display sportsmanlike conduct towards Frank Mir. Although the drama Big Brock brought to the octagon, he is a spectacular athlete. The only work he needs (at least in my opinion) is a big hefty spoonful of “shut-Juice” So who will bring him his dose of “shut-up”??? I think we all know who will be the man to humble Brock Lesnar….

The man to submit the Big OAF will be Shane Carwin. The man has class, he has a good home and good ol fashioned parents to seemed to groom their boys into hard working, persevering men. Tough and rugged Shane will bring the class, conduct and sportsmanship that the UFCis all about. There is no such thing as an “entourage” with Shane. His drive and work ethic in and out of the cage speak volumes of his integrity and heart. Spoiled Brock needs some tough love that will come from big brother Shane Carwin.

I think many MMA fans are holding back in anticipation for UFC 106. It will be bittersweet to see Carwin serve Lesnar what he needs most… A big glass of “shut-up juice” and some “humble pie”

Let’s get it on!

Frank Mir Gives Brock Lesnar Some UFC 100 Advice

Tuesday June 30, 2009

When Frank Mir and Brock Lesnar tangled at UFC 81, Lesnar basically came forward like a lightning rod looking to use big punches to set up a fast takedown. Once he got the takedown, he followed with some furious ground and pound that almost took Mir out.Keyword- almost. Instead, Lesnar’s aggressiveness opened him up for a kneebar that ended the fight. According to UFC.TV, Mir believes that Lesnar’s best bet would be to attempt that exact same strategy in their rematch at UFC 100.

“If Brock really comes out and tries to abandon the running at me, heads over heels and just trying to knock, bull rush me over, I honestly think that’s his best approach,” said Mir. “I would just come after me – take a chance, ’cause to sit there and play the cat and mouse game with me, and jab and slip and move around, I think that’s a slow death for him that he can’t possibly win.”

Is that good advice? Only to an extent. The reality is that Lesnar should not play a slow ground game with Mir and will need to use his sheer size, power, and athleticism to push the pace. Slow is the name of the game in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which is Mir’s forte. If Lesnar doesn’t do some fast damage on the ground then he’ll likely find himself tapping. By the same token, a berserker style is what put Lesnar in a position to be submitted at UFC 81 in the first place. Thus, he’ll need to use his power and sheer athleticism to stun his opponent without making that one big mistake.

It will be interesting to see if he can pull it off.

Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida, a karate specialist, used his kicks to gain the advantage and then landed a series a punches that knocked Rashad Evans down three times in the second round to win the UFC light heavyweight championship at UFC 98 in Las Vegas.

The final blow was a devastating left hook that flattened Evans. His 205-pound body collapsed faster than the last few grains of a sand in a timer.

“I tried all my life to be a champion, and I’m very, very happy,” Machida said. “And now, I’m going to keep this belt for a long time. And to everyone, if you have a dream in your life, go ahead, it’s possible.”"

Machida’s unorthodox style kept Evans (18-1-1) at bay the entire fight. Machida (15-0) landed big left kicks in the first and second rounds, helping to keep Evans at bay. Machida connected on a left leg kick to the body, followed by a left hand that dropped Evans to the ground toward the end of the first round. Machida pounced on Evans and landed a few shots before the champion got back to his feet.

“A little dizzy,” Evans said when asked by Joe Rogan how he was feeling after the fight. “This is the first time ever being on the other side. You gotta take it how you give it, just smiling and knowing that every time you get a chance to come out here, you get a chance to prove yourself. So, maybe next time I’ll do better.”

Where are you from?
I am from Newton, New Jersey, born and raised until I joined the military.

Where/What do you do for a living?
I’m in the U.S. Air Force. I’m been in since October of 2005, I’m a Senior Airman (E-4) and an aerospace ground equipment (AGE) mechanic. I’m currently station at Eielson AFB, Alaska but soon heading to Moody AFB, Georgia.

What got you started in MMA?
I’ve been in Isshinryu Karate for 13 years and I’m a second degree black belt in that style. i also wrestled in high school, i feel that MMA is my next step in my martial arts career.

Where do you train?
I guess my training started when i started traditional martial arts when i was eight years old. My dojo was Black Dragon Isshinryu Karate in Newton, New Jersey. we didn’t just do regular Isshinryu, which is already a mix of two other Okinawan styles, we threw in boxing, Judo/wrestling, and some basic Jiu-Jitsu.

My actual MMA training stared with “Team Alaska Gladiators” in Fairbanks, Alaska in early 2008. i like the training there, boxing, wrestling/Jiu-Jitsu, and Muy Thai. Three coaches lead the gym, head coach David Knight, asst. coach Mike and asst coach Wilson Bailey. All fighters them selves and David Knight holds the welterweight belt for the Alaska Fighting Championship (AFC).

What fighter do you like to mimic?
There’s not a specific one, I like the strikers the stand up guys. But if I had to choose it would be Chuck Liddell

What style of fighting do you prefer?
I prefer the stand up styles, Muy Thai and any Karate. I enjoy striking and going toe to toe and so does the crowd. I also enjoy going to the ground but keeping it active. I don’t like the fight if there’s a stalemate on the ground.

If you could fight anyone who would it be and why?
That’s a tough one, I don’t think I’m at the level to call out any of the big name guys yet. As of right now I’d like to have a rematch with the first guy I fought. He’s a wrestler and he beat me by a decision, it sucked. He did what the judges wanted to see, take me down and stay on top. I had a few submission attempts but couldn’t finish him, had a solid triangle choke at the end of the first but the bell saved him. My striking was good I caused more damage than he did but just like Dana White says, “Never let it go to the judges.”

What weight division are you fighting in?
I fight either at 145lbs or 155lbs. I walk around at 150lbs so I can go either way. If my career get serious I may move up but for right now I like the weight that I’m at.

Do you plan to take your fighting to a professional level?
Right now my main focus is my Wife and my military career but if the opportunity comes up where I can fit some professional fights in I’ll take it.

How did you feel the first time you dominated a fight?
It was unreal, I came off a tough loss from my first fight and I wasn’t going to let my record fall to 0-2. I worked a lot on my ground game, submission escapes and how to control my opponent better. I finished the fight in the first round with a mounted triangle choke and i was throwing punches down until he tapped. it was great, people coming up to you saying awesome fight, I felt I redeemed myself from not winning my first fight. but also having the taste of defeat made this win mean so much more.

What is your amateur record?
My current record is 1-1, once I get out of Alaska and back to the lower 48 I’ll get some more fights in.

How did you get your Nickname “The Rage”?
That name was given to when I first started doing Jiu-Jitsu, they offered a class at the gym at Eielson, AFB. I had a hard time adapting to it and I’d get pissed. when that happened I just used my aggression to focus on what I was doing and i picked it up a little faster. The instructor said, “Mike you got a lot of rage in you,” and it stuck.
